Moving on Mountains

Presented at ISAP Zurich in December 2022.

Since its inception, mountaineering has been a mostly unrecognized subculture of misfits climbing mountains for no obvious reason. In only the last couple of years, that collective attitude has shifted with the help of globally distributed films like Free Solo, Meru, The Dawn Wall, The Alpinist, 14 Peaks and others. What is it about mountains? And why is mountaineering so dramatically a disproportionately male endeavor? We'll discuss a theory about the mountain climber's psyche and to what extent he is hypnotized by the symbol of the mountain. The Fisher King myth will offer some insight as to why climb mountains at all. I'll also share some media from my own escapades on mountainsides, focusing on the Eiger in Switzerland.
